Repair or Replace? Understanding Tyre Puncture Damage
Whether a tyre can be repaired or needs replacing depends on:
- The size and location of the puncture
- Internal damage from driving on a deflated tyre
Tyre Puncture Repair Guidelines:
Tread Area: Repairable if the puncture is less than 6mm in diameter and has no internal damage
Shoulder Area: Replacement recommended – not safe to repair
Sidewall: Replacement required – repairs are unsafe
All major tyre manufacturers agree that sidewall or shoulder punctures should not be repaired.
How We Repair Your Tyre – Our Professional Process
To ensure the safety and longevity of your tyre, we follow a strict repair procedure that meets industry standards:
Step 1: Full Tyre Inspection
- Tyre is removed from the wheel for a thorough internal and external inspection
- We check for hidden damage that may not be visible from the outside
Step 2: Plug & Patch Repair
- A mushroom plug is used to fill the puncture path from inside to outside, ensuring a stronger, safer repair
- The inner liner is cleaned, buffed, and cemented before applying a patch to retain air pressure
Step 3: Wheel Balancing & Refitting
The tyre is reinstalled, inflated, and balanced to prevent vibrations and ensure even wear
Every repaired tyre must be balanced before refitting to maintain proper vehicle stability.
Important Tyre Repair Guidelines
- Act fast – always repair a punctured tyre as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
- Avoid temporary roadside repairs – they are unsafe and should be replaced with a proper repair immediately.
- Never repair a tyre without removing it from the wheel – hidden internal damage can lead to tyre failure.
Can Run-Flat Tyres Be Repaired?
Contrary to popular belief, some run-flat tyres can be repaired under specific conditions:
- The puncture is in the tread area (not the sidewall or shoulder)
- The tyre has not been driven on while deflated
However, major tyre manufacturers do not recommend repairing run-flat tyres, as their structural integrity may be compromised. Instead, run-flats should be replaced as soon as possible.
